La Shawn knows how a healthy and safe home can impact your future — no matter where you grow up. He has championed legislation protecting homeowners and is a leader in advocating for funding for affordable housing in Illinois.
He has passed laws that ensure a defaulting homeowner be notified by mail that they have the right to remain in their home for 30 days after the entry of the order of possession and made it illegal for condo associations to disapprove a sale of a condo unit if the buyer uses financing guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration.
During the housing crisis, La Shawn helped homeowners facing foreclosure and introduced and passed a resolution urging Congress to enact a two-year moratorium on interest rate reset increases under subprime adjustable rate mortgage home loans in 2008. He also introduced a resolution which was adopted urging the U.S. Congress to help prevent residential foreclosures.
La Shawn formed a Foreclosure Prevention Task Force for the West Side of Chicago and western suburbs and has held numerous town hall events focused on preventing foreclosure.
